A device (10) for measuring, calibrating, and testing the strength of magnetic fields, particularly those generated by a magnetic nerve stimulator, is provided. The device (10) includes a coil (14) of wire and either conductive pads or an ammeter/voltmeter attached to the coil (14) of wire. The coil (14) is disposed in the interior of a housing (12). In one embodiment, a locator window (16) is formed in the housing (12) in a position internal to the coil (14). The locator window (16) allows the user to see through the device (10) and thus position the device properly with respect to the source of the magnetic field. In a preferred embodiment, the coil (14) is oblong and is disposed perpendicular to the end face of the magnetic core to be tested. By disposing the coil perpendicularly, the extent of the field can be determined, and thus the depth of field penetration into the body of a patient using the magnetic nerve stimulator can be determined. Preferably, a microprocessor (24) is provided which converts a value of voltage or current induced in the coil (14) into a value of magnetic field strength. The microprocessor (24) transmits the value of magnetic field strength to the display (26).
