A bus system for connecting control units (11; 12; 13) in a motor vehicle, whereby said control units are connected to a communication bus (1) in addition to an application bus or diagnosis bus (2). The application or diagnosis bus is not used during error-free operation of the vehicle. If the communication bus (1) fails, the messages from the control units (11; 12; 13) are transmitted on the application bus or diagnosis bus (2).
