An adaptor device for use in a muzzle loading mortar which fires a projectile having a propulsive charge 11 located in a tubular tail 6 comprises a cylindrical base 17 adapted to engage the breech block 2 and carrying a firing pin mounting rod 16. The rod 16 is either rigidly fixed to the base which in this case is provided with an aperture 22 extending therethrough to allow air to pass the base during insertion of the device into the mortar through the muzzle thereof or received in a bore of a cylindrical member rigidly fixed to the base such that the rod may be projected forward by the normal firing pin of the mortar (Figs. 3, 6; not shown). In the latter case the base is provided with a flange which is adapted to be clamped between the rear end of the mortar barrel and the breech block. The cartridge comprising the propulsive charge 11 also includes an envelope 12 of plastics material enclosing the charge 11, a piston 10, a cap 13, a transmission charge 14 and a seal 15. |
