A viscometer for continuously determining the viscosity of a fluid such as a polymeric liquid comprises a viscosity measuring conduit 3a, 3b, 5 in parallel with a main conduit 1 of a process line, means for detecting the pressure drop of the liquid along a capillary tube 5 and means for maintaining the temperature of the measuring conduit constant. The capillary tube is isolated from the main conduit 1 by a suction pump 4a driven by a motor 7a and a speed reducing device 8a, and a discharge pump 4b driven by a motor 7b and a speed reducing device 8b. The pressure drop along the capillary tube is measured by transducers 6a, 6b connected to a differential pressure determining circuit 9, the output of which is fed to a viscosity indicator 10. The measuring conduit is located in a case 12, the temperature of which is maintained constant by a temperature detector 13, a controller 14 and a heater 15. The output of the transducer 6b is also fed to an adjuster 11 which automatically controls the speed of the pump 4b to maintain atmospheric pressure at the input of the pump 4b. Alternatively, the adjuster may be manually controlled. |
