A detergent for silverware which comprises a weak acid and a compound capable of forming a complex salt containing silver, has a detergency of 80 or higher as determined through 45-sec immersion of silver blackened with sodium polysulfide, and optionally contains at least one additive selected from the group consisting of a deodorant, a rust preventive, and a detergent for oils. It preferably further contains an ampholytic surfactant. The silverware detergent is safe, odorless, and chemically stable and can be stored over long. When the detergent is used for cleansing silverware, the sulfide film adherent to the silverware surface can be easily dissolved away. A detergent for metal goods is also disclosed which comprises a weak acid and a compound capable of forming a complex salt containing a metal other than silver. The detergent for metal goods is safe, odorless, and chemically stable and can be stored over long. When the detergent is used for cleansing a metal good, the rust, smear, etc. adherent to the surface thereof can be easily dissolved away.
