The roll is made of hard cast iron. Its basic crystal structure includes both pearlite and cementite phases. The surface layer is subjected to plasma diffusion treatment. It may be shell cast, with or without a high alloying of chromium, or may be centrifugally cast. The surface layer may be subjected to plasmanite treatment. The roll may be treated in a nitriding furnace.
