The diagnostic appliance regulates combustion processes with periodical alteration of the fuel:air ratio for combustion. The probe signal alternates between a first range of high signal readings indicating a lack of oxygen and a second range of low signal values indicating an excess of oxygen. In a third range, the diagnostic appliance emits a faulty reading if the probe signal is longer than the forecast period inside the third range, or if alterations in the electric heating current occur.
