A bulk weld overlaying a weldable base (12) utilizes a consumable strip electrode (20) in which a predetermined quantity of weld particles in the form of a pile (16) is placed along a length of the weldable base (12) to be weld cladded, the consumable strip electrode (20) being fed along the length of the pile without transverse oscillation, with an arc from the electrode (20) to the weldable base (12) or to the pile of weld particles (16). The consumable strip electrode (20) and its arc and the pile of weld particles (16) are moved linearly along a length of the weldable base without transverse oscillation of the consumable strip electrode (20) thereby forming a puddle which melts and welds the consumable strip electrode (20) and the pile of weld particles (16) to the weldable base without substantial penetration of the weldable base (12). The consumable electrode (20) can have flanges on each of its sides pointing in the direction of movement.
