A method for stamping slots into a tubular section, e.g. for producing upright supports for shelving, uses a cutting edge stamp (11) which cuts through the wall of the section and leaves a tag which is bent inwards. A thrust element (12) inside the tubular section takes the force of the stamp, as does the opposite wall of the section.
