Highly pure cyanates are obtained by reacting poly-phenol compounds (I) with cyanogen halides in presence of a tert. amine and a water-immiscible organic solvent, using (I) in a concentration of 20-50% and under conditions such that n x d<3/2> = 8 or more, where n = stirrer speed (min<-1>) and d = diameter of stirrer (m). A process for the production of highly pure cyanates involves reacting a phenolic compound of formula (I) with a cyanogen halide (II) in presence of a tert. amine and an organic solvent which is immiscible with water, under conditions such that: (a) the concentration of (I), as given by the ratio (total amount of I)/(total amounts of I plus solvent), is 20-50%; and (b) the expression n x d<3/2> has a value of 8 or more, where n is the speed of rotation (min<-1>) of the stirrer and d is the diameter (m) of the stirrer. A = H or 1-6C alkyl; X = a single bond, a 1-20C organic group, carbonyl, sulfone, divalent sulfur or oxygen; i, n = 0-4.
