The raw material is palm leaves and especially from date palms, oil palms, sago palms, coconut palms, dwarf palms, fan palms, pinnatifid palms, and the like. The green palm leaves are compressed, and the compacted material is chopped into particles. The particles are heated and saturated with a bonding agent. The palm leaf material is heated for a sufficient time for the surface to crack and give porosity. The palm leaves are chopped longitudinally so that the proportion of particles with a predominantly longitudinal shape is at least 50% and especially at least 70% and preferably at least 80%. The longitudinal particles have a length of 40-70 mm and a width of 5-10 mm and a thickness of 0.3-0.5 mm. The particles are scattered so that the longitudinal particles are all generally on the same orientation. The web formed by scattering the particles on a conveyor belt, with the majority of the particles aligned across or along the direction of travel. The particles are scattered to form a web in a single layer, or in a number of layers where the particle alignment is the same in the outer covering layers, while the particles in the center layer(s) are in a random orientation or are arranged at right angles to the particle alignment in the flanking layers. Small residue matter, from the particle chopping stage, is mixed with the chopped particles. The palm leaves are compressed while in loose bundles. During the chopping stage, any foreign mineral material is separated such as sand grains. The compressed palm leaves are chopped by blade shafts, circular blades, disk blades, etc. The material is shaped into bodies by heat and pressure.
