The hand-grip and associated winding spool are used for a lead for an animal, e.g. a dog. The lead may be wound up to pull the dog close to its owner, or may be paid out to allow the dog to run around freely within a wide radius. The housing for the winding spool for the lead may contain a gas cylinder and a spray nozzle, to repel dangerous and unpleasant people. The gas may be tear gas, and it may contain a dye which colours the attacker's clothing and skin with a stain which lasts several days.
