A food cooking oven (4) has a muffle (5), an outer pre-heater (13), and an internal supplementary heating element (11) which raises the internal temperature to that required for the preparation of food. The internal temperature is pre-set by a control unit (23) which is linked to an internal temperature sensor (15), and maintains the internal temperature as required. The control unit (23) reduces the heating output of the pre-heater output (13) in proportion to the heating power output from the supplementary heating element (11), if the temperature set or measured within the oven exceeds a pre-determined threshold value.
