In controlling the operation of a video codec 22 (or 22') designed for encoding video data suitable for radio transmission between a network 12 and a mobile station 10, particularly applicable where the transmission errors are unpredictable, the method entails monitoring one or more parameters of the received or transmitted signal and providing a feedback signal based on the monitored signal, the feedback signal controlling the encoding parameters (start codes or intra-refresh data) in the algorithm of the video codec. The monitored criteria are received signal quality, or received signal strength, or transmission power.
