PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable high-quality printing of a character string of characters of a size exceeding a tape breadth with reducing a consumption amount of the tape. SOLUTION: This printing apparatus includes a key input part 12 through which a character string to be printed is input and a printing means for printing the character string input from the key input part 12 on a tape. A control part 40 inputs a designation of a print mode for printing characters of a height exceeding a breadth of the tape and sets in a flag register 42d. When the character string input from the key input part 12 is ordered to be printed and if printing of characters of a height exceeding the tape breadth is set in the flag register 42d, a print font for each character is turned by 90 deg. and developed to a print buffer 42c, whereby the characters are printed sideways along the tape.
