PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a novel aniline-based polymer which is a poly (2,3- dicarboxylaniline) compound and exhibits a reversible electrical response under a mold condition, and is capable of accumulating a metal ion in a high concentration and useful as a catalyst, an electrode active substance, an electronic material or the like. SOLUTION: There is provided a compound represented in a reduced state by formula I. It is obtained by oxidative polymerization of an aminophthalic acid compound of formula II or a protected derivative thereof. In the formulae, R1 and R2 are each an electron-donating group; and (n) is an integer of at least two. As R1 and R2 are exemplified H, a hydrocarbon and an alkoxy. The oxidative polymerization is carried out using an oxidant or oxygen, or by means of electrode oxidation or the like. The polymerization can be carried out using a solvent and is preferably effected under a basic condition. Desirably, an alkali metal hydroxide is used in an amount of 1-2 times the equivalent of a monomer. When an oxidant is used, it is preferably caused to be present in an amount at least equivalent to a monomer.
