PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a volatile carrier substance for cosmetics which does not contain a cyclic siloxane having 4-6 siloxane groups, has a reactivity as low as possible, and exhibits a good compatibility with many other materials for cosmetics. SOLUTION: A linear organosiloxane mixture is provided which is represented by the formula: R3SiO-(SiR2O)n-SiR3 (wherein each R is independently a 1-18C hydrocarbon group contg. no ethylenically or acetylenically unsatd. bond and optionally fluorinated, chlorinated or cyanated, provided that the mean number of carbon atoms of R groups is 3 or lower; and (n) is 0-20) and of which 80-95 wt.% evaporates in 30 min; 90-99 wt.%, in 60 min; and 95-100 wt.%, in 120 min when measured according to DIN 53249.
