[Also in Division D1] Pieces of flexible sheet material are secured together by locating in a predetermined relationship the pieces to be secured with a preformed web of strands of adhesive composition between them, the adhesive composition being activatable to a bond-forming condition by heating to an extent less than that which would deleteriously affect the pieces of sheet material; applying heat to activate the adhesive composition to form an adhesive bond between the pieces; when the adhesive composition is cool, inserting fastening means in the pieces to secure them together permanently; and treating the joined pieces of material with a solvent for the adhesive composition to remove this composition. Preferably, the pieces are of woven fabric and are to be stitched together to form a garment, the adhesive web being applied between the pieces along the intended line of later stitching. The web may be tacked, by localized heating, to one piece. Alternatively, tents or protective canvas covers may be manufactured and the fastening means may comprise rivets. Heat and pressure may be applied to form the temporary bond with a heated iron, a steamheated garment press or a progressive heating and pressing device. For bonding wool, the adhesive web may have activation temperatures of 250-350‹ F. and, for cotton, 250-450‹ F. Preferably, the adhesive web comprises a non-woven sheet of filaments having a thickness of 0À003-0À010 inch randomly disposed and adhering to one another at crossing points. The sheet is formed by forcing molten or heat-softened thermoplastic material through spinnerettes to form thin filaments which are collected on a moving conveyer. The filaments are formed at a rate faster than the linear speed of the conveyer. Preferably, the sheet has a weight of 20-60 grams per square yard and there are no openings therein larger than 3/16 inch. Specified materials for the adhesive composition are polyesters and copolyesters, polyesteramides, copolyesteramides, polyamides and copolyamides, thermoplastic cellulose derivatives, such as ethyl cellulose, and the polymers and copolymers of styrene and lower alkyl, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl acrylic esters and methacrylic esters. Preferred compositions are copolyesters which correspond to the condensation and polymerization product of one or more glycols, e.g. butane diol, hexane diol and other aliphatic and cycloaliphatic diols, with a mixture of one or more aromatic dicarboxylic acids, e.g. isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, phenyl indane dicarboxylic acid and hexahydrophthalic acid, with one or more aliphatic dicarboxylic acids, e.g. azelaic acid, sebacic acid and dimerized linoleic acid, suitably in the mol. ratio of 1 : 3 to 5 : 1. |
