PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effect the deoxidation of a molten steel with high efficiency by coating a surface of Mg with a metallic element whose melting point is not higher than the boiling point of Mg and whose boiling point is not lower than the temperature of the molten steel to suppress the vaporization caused by the addition of Mg. SOLUTION: When the surface of Mg (a deoxidant)is coated with a metal which is melted at the temperature not higher than the boiling point of Mg and whose boiling point is not lower than the temperature of the molten steel, and the coated Mg is added to the molten steel, the temperature rise speed of Mg can be suppressed, the boiling and vaporization of Mg is suppressed, and the working environment can be improved. At the same time, the yield of Mg can be improved, and the grain diameter of MgO can be reduced to be finely diffused. One or more kinds of Al, Sn, Pb and the alloy thereof can be used as coating metal of the Mg surface. Mg containing 0.1-50% Mg, and the balance one or more kinds of Ni, Cu, Bi, rare earth metals, Al and Mn as a solvent element is preferable.
