PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing in high productivity polyimide powder having a large specific surface area and capable of affording polyimide molding with good mechanical properties. SOLUTION: This method for producing polyimide powder comprises the following procedure: an aromatic tetracarboxylic acid or a diester derivative thereof is dispersed in a solvent and then heated into a homogeneous solution, and an aromatic diamine is then added to the above solution at a temp. of >=140 deg.C under agitation, and the aimed polyimide particles deposited is isolated; wherein it is desirable that the aromatic tetracarboxylic acid or diester thereof is pyromellitic acid or a diester derivative thereof, and the aromatic diamine is 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether.
