PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To dispense with operation by an operator by providing a control means to select the packaging control information according to the softness of an article from the information value measured by a detecting means and to allow a packaging mechanism to effect the packaging action to automatically switch and set the packaging control information according to the article every time the king of the article to be packaged is changed. SOLUTION: A control part 113 receives the detection from a transmission sensor 103 and a reflection sensor 105 respectively, and reads the dimensions of a tray which is an article to be packaged. The quantity of the light which is emitted by a light-emitting part, transmits the tray and is received by a light-receiving part, i.e., the transmissivity is received from the transmission sensor 103 as the information. The tray is judged by the transmissivity whether the tray is a regular one or a soft one. A packaging program for a regular tray or for a soft tray is selected from a storage part 112, and the packaging program is run according to the dimensions of the tray measured by the transmission sensor 103 and the reflection sensor 105. The control part 112 outputs the signal to control the respective drives for a packaging mechanism E.
