PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rapidly and accurately polish by polishing with surface grinding machine without buffing. SOLUTION: The method for gravure engraving comprises the steps of chucking both ends of a roll W to be engraved to rotate it, pressing the roll W by a grinding wheel end face of a freely rotatable PVA polishing grinding wheel 27b and freely running the grinding wheel 27b with rotation of the roll while applying lubricating liquid to a pressing position to move the grinding wheel 27b, thereby generating a finely relative speed at line contact positions of the roll W with the grinding wheel 27b to mirror polish the roll W.
