PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sense a type of a medium in a noncontact state by driving a radio tranceiver which senses a second electromagnetic field while transmitting a first electromagnetic field in relation to a print head and setting a transponder accommodating a memory storing data showing the type of the medium in a shaft. SOLUTION: A supplying spool 120 in the laser thermal transfer printer has a coloring agent-supplying substance 125 wound around a shaft 310. A rotatable spindle set in the printer is fitted and inserted in a hollow hole 319 of the shaft 310, whereby the spool is supported. A tranceiver unit 330 for transmitting a first electromagnetic field and sensing a second electromagnetic field is arranged at a position adjacent to the supplying spool 120. Moreover, a transponder 340 is set to be buried in a wall of the shaft 310. The transponder 340 includes an EEPROM semiconductor chip for generating the second electromagnetic field showing a characteristic of data of a medium type. The medium type is sensed by receiving the data.
