<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a transesterification of anα-ketocarboxylate in an excellent yield without any side reaction by using a specific metallic catalyst and an anhydrous alcohol as a reaction medium. SOLUTION: This transesterification of anα-ketocarboxylate is performed in an anhydrous alcohol as a reaction medium and in the presence of a stannic catalyst, a titanium catalyst, a zirconium catalyst or a lithium catalyst as a catalyst or their acetyl acetonate. For instance, anα-ketocarboxylate of the formula (R1 and R2 are each a 1-30C alkyl, aryl or heteroaryl) is subjected to a transesterification with an alcohol of the formula: R3OH (R3 has the same meaning as R1 and R2 but is not the same as R1). Especially, methyl pyruvate is subjected to transesterification in an anhydrous ethanol to obtain ethyl pyruvate. Preferably, the catalyst is used at 0.0001-20 wt.%.</p> |
