<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new compound having high compatibility with liquid crystals, exhibiting excellent liquid crystal nature and wide liquid crystal temperature range and useful as a liquid crystal element having high response and/or low driving voltage. SOLUTION: The objective compound is expressed by formula I [R is a 1-20C alkyl, an alkoxy, an alklenyl or the like; the ring A is trans-1,4- cyclohexylene, a (substituted) 1,4-phenylene or the like; L is CH2CH2, (CH2)4 or the like; Xa, Xb, Xc, Xd and Xe are each H, F or the like] such as 1- fluoro-2-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-6-propylnaphthalene. The objective compound can be produced via a step comprising the reaction of a naphthalene derivative of formula II (Wa is Br, I, Cl or the like; Ya is an OH-protecting group) with an organometallic reaction agent of formula Ra-Ma (Ra is a 2-7C alkylene; Ma is MgBr or the like) in the presence of a nickel catalyst.</p> |
