PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus which detects transparent bodies such as plastic envelopes, transports these bodies to a desired sorting port, sorts and collects the transparent bodies and has a good sorting rate. SOLUTION: This apparatus is constituted by installing a line sensor 100 which is lined up with a plurality of optical sensors perpendicularly to a transportation direction and is capable of detecting the contours of postal items and the presence of transparent portions therein onto a transportation path as near sepn. sections as possible. A means for minimizing the transparent portion detecting ranges 300, 301 of the sensor 100 is used by setting these ranges to the same as the detecting ranges of the of the optical sensors for detecting the passage of the postal items installed at the plural points of the transporting path.
