PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structure for joining backing materials to column members capable of internally fitting the angular pipe-shaped backing materials to the angular pipe-shaped column members while fitting the outer faces at the corners of the backing materials well with the inner face at the corners of the column members. SOLUTION: When angular pipe-shaped backing materials 4-7 are internally fitted to angular pipe-shaped column members 1-3 into one unit with welding C, peripheral rough faces 12 are formed at least on the inner faces at the corners of the backing materials 4-7. When the backing materials 4-7 are internally fitted thereto, the corners of the backing materials 4-7 are easily bent and deformed at their required points because of the existance of the rough faces 12. In this way, the bent outer faces at the corners of the backing materials 4-7 are fitted well with the bent inner faces at the corners of the column members 1-3, and so both of the faces mutually contact with almost no gap between both of the faces to cause inexpensive and quick joining work with welding C in a less amount of welding material to be used.
