PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an unbearable force from being brought to bear upon a log or a spindle even when a pair of rolls are brought into contact with the outer periphery of the log under such a state that the outer peripheral shape of the log is different by changing the thickness of a veneer to be cut. SOLUTION: A bearing base 39 which supports a first roll 41 and a second roll 43 as the paired rolls in a freely rotatable manner, is supported on a transfer base 31 in a freely vertically movable manner. Thus the bearing base 39 can be moved vertically, even when the thickness of a veneer to be cut is changed and accordingly the outer peripheral shape of a log 1 is changed. Consequently the first and the second roll 41, 42 can be brought into contact with the log 1 along its outer periphery without the application of an unbearable force to the log 1.
