PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent deterioration of the product quality caused by the contamination of a container in a method for producing a glass or a ceramic by a sol-gel method. SOLUTION: This method for producing a multicomponent glass or a ceramic by a sol-gel method by using a metal alkoxide and a metal salt as a raw material comprises using at least two kinds of organic solvents miscible with water, or at least one kind of the organic solvents miscible with the water in combination with one or more kinds of water and an acid in a washing step for washing a tool contacting with at least one of the metal alkoxide, the metal salt and the sol.
