PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply and inexpensively obtain the subject compound in industrially performable and at a high purity and a high yield by reacting o-(p-tolyl) benzoic acid with isobutylene in the presence of a specific protonic acid catalyst. SOLUTION: This (D) tert-butyl o-(p-tolyl)benzoate of formula III is obtained by reacting (B) o-(p-tolyl)benzoic acid of formula I with (C) isobutylene of formula II at preferably from -40 deg.C to +7 deg.C, especially preferably from -15 deg.C to +2 deg.C in the presence of (A) a catalyst-activating amount of fluorosulfonic acid, trifluoromethane sulfonic acid, a perfluoro 2-8C alkyl sulfonic acid, a partially fluorinated 2-8C alkylsulfonic acid, a partially fluorinated 5-8C cycloalkylsulfonic acid or a mixture of these acids (preferably fluorosulfonic acid, CF3SO3H, C2F5SO3H or the like). Preferably, a using amount of the component A is 0.001-10 mol.%, more preferably 0.1-4 mol.% of the component B.
