4-substituted piperidine analogs, compositions containing the same and the method of using them as active antagonists of NMDA receptors

A compound of formula I or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is claimed wherein Ar1 and Ar2 are independently optionally substituted aryl or heteroaryl; z is a single or double bond; X is -(CHR2)m-, O, S or NR3 provided that when z is a double bond then X is not O, S or NR3; R1 is H or OH; n is 0 to 2; R4 is H or OH when z is a single bond provided that: (i) when n is 0 then z is a double bond and R4 is not present; (ii) when n is 1 or 2 and Q is -C C- and z is a double bond or R4 is OH then Ar1 is an aryl substituted by halogen and (iii) when R4 is OH then R2 is not OH or alkoxy. A pharmaceutical composition containing a compound of formula useful in treating disorders responsive to the selective blockade of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subtypes is claimed. Also claimed is a process to prepare the compounds of formula I.
