An isolated naturally occurring or recombinant human derived polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 70% similarity to the amino sequence SEQ. ID NO: 6 as defined in the specification and which exhibits at least one property in common with vascular endothelial growth factor is claimed. A nucleic acid molecule encoding the amino acid sequence having at least 70% similarity to the amino sequence SEQ. ID NO: 6 as defined in the specification and which exhibits at least one property in common with vascular endothelial growth factor is also claimed. A pharmaceutical composition containing the above defined peptide useful for inducing astroglial proliferation and promoting neuronal survival and/or proliferation is claimed.
