A claw bowl 10, for use with a milking machine, includes an outlet pipe 14 having an opening in the wall of the bowl, a valve member 12 positioned in bowl 10, a valve stem 18 extending through a hole in the wall of bowl 10 and being slidably received therein and an actuating arm 24 having two ends, the first end 22 being attached at or adjacent to a second 20 of the valve stem and the second end 28 of arm 24 being located, in use, above outlet pipe 14. The valve member 12 is located at a first end of the valve stem. The outlet pipe, in use, is attached to a source of low pressure and is the outlet from the bowl for milk. Sliding movement of stem 18 in the hole moves member 12 from a first position (Fig. 2) in sealing contact with the opening to a second position away from the opening (Fig. 1) and movement of the second end 28 of arm 24 towards pipe 14 causes a consequential sliding movement of stem 18 which moves member 12 to the first position. A sealing member 32 may be attached at or adjacent to the second end 20 of the valve stem which member, in use, seals the hole to prevent air entering the bowl when the valve member is in the second position.
