The selective production of acetic acid from a gaseous feed of ethane (C2H6) and/or ethylene (C2H4) and oxygen (O2) at elevated temperature comprises contacting the feed with a catalyst (I) containing the elements molybdenum (Mo), palladium (Pd), X and Y in the gram atomic ratios a:b:c:d in combination with oxygen, as MoaPdbXcYd (I), in which: X = chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), niobium (Nb), tantalum (Ta), titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), tellurium (Te) and/or tungsten (W); Y = boron (B), aluminium (Al), gallium (Ga), indium (In), platinum (Pt), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), bismuth (Bi), cerium (Ce), cobalt (Co), rhodium (Rh), iridium (Ir), copper (Cu), silver (Ag), gold (Au), iron (Fe), ruthenium (Ru), osmium (Os), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), caesium (Cs), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr), barium (Ba), zirconium (Zr), hafnium (Hf), nickel (Ni), phosphorus (P), lead (Pb), antimony (Sb), silicon (Si), tin (Sn), thallium (Tl) and/or uranium (U); a = 1; b > 0; c > 0; and d = 0-2. Also claimed is a catalyst of formula (I) for selective oxidation of C2H6 and/or C2H4 with O2, in which: X = Cr, Mn, Nb, Ta, Ta, Ti, V and/or W; and Y, a, b, c and d = as above. |
