Optical recording medium has a grooved transparent substrate (1) under recording layer of high complex refractive index partial mirror (2) that is not in the pentagon of vertices 7.15-i3.93, 7.15-i5.85, 8.96-i5.28, 9.56-i5.90, 8.14-i3.77 in the n,k plane; superposed by non-liq.-crystalline high molecular wt. buffer layer (3) and optional dye; thick reflective layer thereon; together forming Fabry-Perot with buffer thickness adjusted to high reflective state and optional overlay of protective coat (5). Also claimed are the manufacturing method and the apparatus for making the medium.
