PURPOSE:To enhance the discharge performance of an alkaline battery without adding mercury by covering the surface of powder of zinc or zinc alloy with an alloy consisting of bismuth, tin and indium. CONSTITUTION:Powder of zinc or zinc alloy covered at its surface with an alloy consisting of bismuth, tin and indium is used as a negative electrode active material for an alkaline battery. The percentage of the bismuth, tin and indium contained in the alloy is preferably in the range 55 to 60wt.%, 15 to 20wt.%, and 20 to 30wt.%, respectively. The amount by which the alloy covers the surface of the powder is preferably in the range 0.1 to 10 parts by weight to 100 parts by weight of the powder of zinc or zinc alloy. The discharge characteristic of the alkaline battery is thus enhanced while the corrosion property of the battery is maintained at a high level. |
