The application provides tetrahydro-b-carboline compounds having useful central nervous system activity of the formula I, where R1, R3 and R5 each are H or C1-3alkyl; R6 is H, C1-6alkyl, C2-6alkenyl, halo, haloC1-6alkyl, COR5, C1-10alkanoyl,C02R5', NO2, SR5 and OR5; n is 1, 2 or 3; n' is 1, 2 or 3, m is 1 or 2 and R5' is C1-4alkyl. Provided are formulations and methods for using the tetrahydro-b-carboline and related compounds. Such compounds are particularly useful for the modulation of a 5-HT2B receptor.
