Ortho-sulphonamide heteroaryl hydroxamic acid derivatives of formula ZSO2N(CH2R7)ACONHOH (I) and their salts and optical isomers or diastereoisomers are new: A = 5-6 membered Het; the hydroxamic acid and sulphonamido moieties being bonded to adjacent C; Het = heteroaryl containing 1-3 N, O and/or S and optionally substituted; Z = Ar, Het or Het fused to Ph or other Het; Ar = naphthyl or Ph or Ph fused to Het (both optionally substituted); R7 = (a) H or 1-6C alkyl, 2-6C alkenyl or 2-6C alkynyl (each optionally substituted); (b) Ph or naphthyl (optionally substituted) or a 5-6 membered Het; or (c) 3-6C cycloalkyl or 3-6 membered cycloheteroalkyl; or R7CH2NA forms a non-aromatic 1,2-heteroaryl fused 7-10 membered heterocycle (optionally containing an additional O, S and/or N and optionally fused to another benzene ring).
