PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a reproduced output in which crosstalk is small and whose level is sufficiently high even when magneto-optical recording area where embossed pits are formed and the area where the pits are not formed are made adjacent by making a magnitude of a phase difference to be generated by the double refraction of a substrate and the magnitude of a phase difference to be generated by the Kerr elliptic effect of a recording layer within specific ranges. SOLUTION: Recording layers are formed on a substrate on which embossed pits indicating information are formed and the layers are made to have a groove recording format. In intra-surface directions, a direction orthogonal to a recording track and a direction being along the recording track are respectively defined as an x direction and a y direction. When a phase difference to be generated by the double refraction of the substrate and a phase difference to be generated by the Kerr elliptic effect in the phase difference between the deflection component of the x direction and the deflection component of the y direction of the return light of the reproducing light reflected on the recording layer are respectively defined asϕbr andϕMO, these are made to satisfy -20 deg.C<ϕbr<+10 deg., -45 deg.<(ϕbr+ϕMO)<+15 deg.. Moreover, when the track pitch is made to be <=1.0μm, the reduction effect of crosstalk is made larger.
