PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having excellent electromagnetic transducing characteristic, which is high in output and reduced in the generation of dropout, and excellent in traveling stability and durability. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a lower layer and an upper layer magnetic layer having respectively <=2.5μm and <=0.3μm thickness and as a binder and a solvent contained in an upper layer coating material, each of the binder and the solvent, which exhibits that the extent of light scattering of the binder measured about a solution prepared by dissolving the binder in the solvent is >=8000 nm by weight average, is used.
