PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a highly precise monitoring function which identifies the propriety shape of a medium at low cost by identifying the shape of the medium based on a detection signal of a medium carrying position and an output signal of an encoder monitoring the carrying of the medium. SOLUTION: The card carrying path 15 of a magnetic card reader 11 is provided with plural pairs of carrying rollers R which face to each other vertically along a carrying direction and 1st to 3rd detection sensors S1 to S3 and a magnetic card 14 inserted into a card insertion slot 13 is taken inwardly. An encoder for conveyance monitoring is provided at the position of a carrying roller R whose position corresponds to the 1st detection sensor S1. Respective sensors S1 to S3 provided at fixed intervals on the path 15 detect the current position of the carried card 14 and the encoder measures the conveyance distance of the carried card 14. A CPU finds the length of the card 14 and shape change such as the existence of open holes and identifies the propriety shape of the card based on prescribed management data.
