A spindle comprises a tube 1 having axial grooves 2 with outwardly diverging walls 3, each groove housing an expandable hose 15 and an axially extending element 8 radially movable to project from the spindle to grip a winding sleeve on the spindle, the tube 1 having attached (e.g. by welding or rivets) on each ridge 5 an axially extending metal strip whose edges guide the element 8. The tube 1 may be strengthened by the insertion of a further tube riveted to the groove bottoms 4. The element 8 may be of T-section with the leg radially outwards, or of U-section with the arms of the U alternately projecting outwards. The hoses 15 may be of rubber or plastics. The tube 1 may be rolled, forged or drawn, or be of plastics reinforced with glass fibre. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 907,056. |
