The protective device consists of an annular body with tapered shroud portion 4 and straight portion(s) 5 (and optionally 10). At least one fin 6 is provided at the region of fluid intake (to the annular body) so as to form protection for the propeller 17 and prevent injury from the propeller to people in the water adjacent to the propeller. It is stated that the tapered and straight body provides improved propeller operation.
