PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce either inspection time or diagnosis time in a method for inspecting the functionality of a container, especially a tank-breathing device. SOLUTION: In a method, the functionality of a container, especially a tank- breathing device that includes a tank 10, a suction filter 20 that is connected to the tank 10 via connection piping 12 and has breathing piping 22, and a tank-breathing valve 30 that is connected to the suction filter 20 via valve piping 24 is inspected. In this case, the method supplies pressure from a pressure source 50 into the container and estimates the presence of leakage from a pressure process and a supply volume flow rate, measures at least one operation characteristic value of the pressure source 50 when supplying pressure to determine the pressure process and/or the supply volume flow rate, and estimates the presence of leakage from the measurement. In this case, at least one operation characteristic value of the pressure source 50 is measured only for a specific amount of time (Δtm) in the supply of pressure, and the presence of leakage is estimated by the extrapolation of the time chart of operating characteristic values being obtained at this time.
