PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a range finding arithmetic unit of a small circuit scale, and a range finding operating method with a quick response time. SOLUTION: This unit is provided with an image sensor means 20 for outputting light intensity data successively from one end of an image sensor toward the other end of it, a light intensity data storing means 71 for storing the intensity data successively output from the image sensor, and a distance detecting means 70 for detecting a distance as to a visual field direction while the light intensity data required for range finding for the next visual field direction is output from the image sensor. Since the unneccessary light intensity data never used again in distance calculation after measurement for one direction is generated when it is finished, the spent data is removed from a memory, and the storing means 71 allows all the measurement by only a capacity required for one direction.
