PURPOSE: A process and device are disclosed for extrapolating the brightness and/or color values of the image points of a first image segment of any shape onto image points of a second image segment of any shape. CONSTITUTION: The extrapolation is carried out in such a way that a signal curve of the brightness and/or color values of the image points of the second image segment is smoothed and that the signal curve of the brightness and/or color values of the image points of the second segment is adapted to the brightness and/or color values of the image points of the first image segment in a boundary area between the first image segment and the second image segment. Thereby, considerable saving can be achieved in quantization, coding and transfer of spectrum coefficient relating to image coding.
