PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To substantially planatarize a magnetic gap layer without adversely affecting to regenerative signal characteristics of a combined head having a magneto-resistive reproducing head part. SOLUTION: The magnetic head 10 has a reproduction lower shielding layer 20, a reproduction lower insulating layer 22, a magneto-resistance element layer 24, a pair of hard magnetic material layers 26 and a pair of terminal layers 28 successively thin-film forming on a substrate 12. The reproduction lower insulating layer 22 integrally has a thick part 22b in contact with the magneto- resistance element layer 24 and a thin part 22d in contact with the hard magnetic material layers 26. The difference in the thicknesses between the thick part 22b and the thin part 22d substantially corresponds to the difference between the total thickness of the magneto-resistance element layer 24 and the total thickness of the hard magnetic material layer 26 and a terminal layer 28. As a result, the front surface 24a of the magneto-resistance element layer 24 and the front surfaces 28a of the respective terminal layers 28 are placed on substantially the same plane and eventually the magnetic gap layer 34 is substantially planatarized.
