PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently cover defective part with IBG and the like when defect exist in a magnetic tape. SOLUTION: This magnetic tape control device is provided with a first control means for decoding a command from a host computer 1, a writing format generating means 5, a reading format generating means 6, and a second control means for discriminating a command thereby controlling the writing format generating means or the reading format generating means and instructing a magnetic tape driving control means. Further, the device is provided with a data block type discriminating means for detecting the existing place of defect in a magnetic tape and an IBG length specifying means for specifying IBG length to the second control means. When a defect exists at the leading end of a data block, the device controls length of IBG so as to lengthen step by step, and when a defect exists at a rear end of the data block, the device controls length of IBG so as to extend it to the rear end of the data block at a time.
