PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fine image having sufficient density in developing, by application of an ac voltage to a developer carrier, an electrostatic latent image formed on an image carrier and to properly control image density. SOLUTION: In a developing device in which a developer is held on the surface of a developer carrier and conveyed to a development area opposite to an image carrier and developed by application of an ac voltage to the developer carrier, at least two voltage variation parts A1, A2; B1, B2 in which the inclinations of voltage variations vary during the transition of the ac voltage from a peak voltage on the recovery side where the developer is returned to the developer carrier to a peak voltage on the development side where the developer is supplied to the image carrier and during the transition from a peak voltage on the recovery side to a peak voltage on the development side are provided, and the inclinations of the voltage variations at the first voltage variation parts A1, B1 are made gentler than those of the voltage variations at the second voltage variation parts A2, B2.
