PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an electrophoretic display device having a threshold characteristic and having a memory characteristic by using a first substrate having magnetic materials on or within this substrate and using colored electrophoretic particles having magnetism. SOLUTION: A transparent insulative liquid which is not mixed with coloring particles and is not dissolved with coloring dyestuffs is used as the insulative liquid 1. First electrodes 8 and second electrodes 9 to be applied with the voltage different from the voltage of the first electrodes 8 are so arranged as to be offset in the position from the first substrate 3 in a horizontal direction and an electric field controlling the space distribution in the device is formed, by which the colored electrophoretic particles 2 having the magnetism are moved between the first electrodes 8 and the second electrodes 9 in the direction horizontal with the first substrate 3. Two-color display, such as black and white display, is made possible if the constitution in which the first insulating layer 4 or the first electrodes 8 or the first substrate 3 is colored so as to vary in the optical characteristics (hue, reflectivity, etc.), from the colored electrophoretic particles 2 having the magnetism and the second electrodes 9 is adopted.
